Amari is the alpha female of her troop. She rules with an iron fist and has no problem telling someone to get back in line. People generally don’t like her, because of the way she treats her troop members, but one thing is certain no one messes with Amari! Amari has a son named Jack and a juvenile daughter named Jill. She is fiercely protective of both of them. Amari is still nursing Jack, but she’s slowly reducing the duration of each session. While Amari can be mean toward her troop members she can also be very sweet toward them as well. She is regularly seen grooming other individuals in the troop. Amari seems to have a soft spot for Kari as she is seen comforting her, carrying her ventrally, and allowing Kari to eat what she drops.

Defining Characteristics:

  • She is one of the few members that isn’t too overweight.
  • Her facial bone structure is very different to the other individuals in the troop.
  • She has white fur on her temples and below her ears.
  • Her nipples are pink. Her left nipple hangs down lower than her right nipple.
  • She looks like she uses dentures. 🙂

  1. There is a young juvenile male that is around the same age as Olive, but he has darker color fur than him. He was often seen being groomed by Amari when Jack was a baby in the videos that SP BBLover filmed of Jack and even “babysat” Jack a couple of times in those videos as well. It has not been confirmed yet, but I think that “Jace” (name unconfirmed) may be another one of Amari’s offspring and looks younger than Jill and obviously, older than Jack.

    • I was a little curious about him, because I’ve been seeing Amari groom a male juvenile a lot lately and I thought it was Olive(r)/Ollie for a while. I haven’t had the time to put them side by side yet, but I wonder if that’s another one of Amari’s kids. Amari’s troop with the juveniles are the hardest to compare, because they are all pretty similar. The only current difference is shades of fur, but they are all very similar. I’m planning on when we get confirmation on Jill/Olive(r)/Ollie/Jace and figure out if they’re all individuals I’m going to make a comparison page for them as well. Hopefully they’ll grow up and start changing!

    • Shanda (Its14fan) – I’m happy to hear that you love her. 🙂 In my opinion, she doesn’t get enough love for being a good Alpha. She’s such a unique monkey and I’ve always found her to be interesting. I agree with you, she does have a majestic look about her. I always attributed that to the fact that she wasn’t overweight.

  3. Quickly, thank you for creating this site! Amari has lost a lot of weight, lately, and I am pretty sure she has developed diabetes. She is certainly exhibiting the signs and symptoms: Polydipsia (drinking a lot), polyphagia (eating a lot), and polyuria (peeing a lot), combined with weight loss…her body is unable to metabolize the sugars in the fruit she is eating, because of inadequate production of insulin. The sugar builds up in her bloodstream, which makes her very thirsty, because her body is trying to dilute the overload of sugar in her bloodstream. That causes her to pee a lot…her kidneys are trying to flush out her system, and she is spilling a lot of that unused sugar in her urine. That also explains why Lori (latest daughter) has been drinking her pee. It is sweet.

      Yeah, I’m getting caught up on all the troops again now that I’ve finished my job. When I saw how skinny she was, I was really concerned. Her being diabetic was the first thought that came to my mind as well or cancer. Both of those cause a drastic drop in weight. I’ve seen a few monkeys in the area who have tumors growing.

      Amari has always been an intriguing monkey because she was never one of the ones that were overweight. She always maintained a fairly good weight. I wonder if she was diabetic before getting pregnant with Lori or if she developed it during her pregnancy.

      Most of the time infants who are born from diabetic mothers (at least in humans) are on the larger side and not the smaller side. I did find that, “Small size. Usually when the mother has had diabetes for several years and has changes in her blood vessels.” (Unity Point Health).

      I did notice that Lori has a larger head than some of the other babies and her frame is quite a bit smaller. I wonder if it’s a birth defect or if she was born a bit premature?

      I know a lot of people have been tough on Amari for not caring for Lori, but I don’t think she has the energy for it. Even toward the end of her caring for Jack, she wasn’t as protective. He would get ganged up on, and she wouldn’t interfere.

      If she does pass, Jill would take her place and then when Lori is of age she’ll take it from Jill. I hope Amari can recover, but if her blood sugar levels are out of control I don’t see a lot of hope for her or Lori. It doesn’t seem like she’s able to produce enough milk for Lori as I rarely see her breasts refill.

      Yeah, I noticed Lori being attracted to Amari’s urine. I have seen other infants drink urine as well (maybe it’s a rite of passage?) It would make sense if it’s sweet it would be more appealing to Lori.

      • I watched the series from national geographic about rebel monkeys and these macaques after the queen dies the youngest daughter becomes queen. Does this happen with these macaques.

      • I read they drink urine because they’re craving electrolytes and her not getting enough milk from Amari she was a little dehydrated. Its sad that she didn’t protect and comfort Lori

    • I had come to the same idea. There are also other conditions that have some of the same symptoms of PU/PD, polyphagia & weight loss… but when I saw Lori drinking Amari’s urine, that made it more likely to be diabetes since the urine would be sweet.
      She needs a low carb diet! All the sweet fruits and even sugary drinks have done a number on her. It seemed her last pregnancy may be what brought things to a head, maybe exacerbated what was already a developing problem. So if she’s indeed pregnant again that’s worrisome for her.
      I kinda like Amari . I wish she had a stronger troop. and better options for a successor. Lori is clearly not Alpha material since her injuries, Jill is too timid.
      I have wondered if Dolly might be an elder daughter of Amari. Surely she would have had offspring before Jill. And likely the females would still be around. Someone said in a comment they had seen a video from about 10 years ago that looked like Amari with an infant .

      • I saw that video too, in fact have it saved if you want to see it. Amari is quite heavy in the video and has a baby and a juvenile by her side.

    • She drank it because her body craved electrolytes because she didn’t get nursed. That’s about the best thong Amari ever did for Lori, piss so she wouldn’t dehydrate. SAD

  4. Please heal Amari and let her go back with her group. She looks so depressed locked in bars. She is a free animal not a zoo animal. Please give her the help she needs ( perhaps cataract surgery)…then let her go…let nature take it’s course ..don’t decide it for them

  5. Lot of people are saying dolly is amari daughter. But they do not look a like. I see amari in jill and lori. Dolly been attacking lori alot when she was in amari group. I never seen dolly or amari together. I saw the list of her children but dolly is not on the list. Who was dolly father. It look like amari could not stand dolly when she was their.

    • Amari was born in this troop in 2003 and it is where Ashley, as a baby was brought by her family to play with other monkeys. As for Dolly,… Her mother died of Placenta retention a few days after Dolly was born. – the same thing that killed Dolly with the birth of Dalton. Dolly was raised by Amari. Dolly is more vicious than Jill, which is why she became Queen wnhe Amari (who was ill and blind) being removed and rescued with Lori (who had a brain injury from a fractured Skull.). Lori was fed by a new mom named Sasha , along with her own baby, Jesse and Dolly’s baby Sweetie whom Dolly refused to feed..

  6. I was one of those who thought Dolly might be Amari’s daughter. Or else a sister /half sister which may make more sense with their behavior. I was looking at it like: Amari surely must have at least one older daughter in the troop: So who is it?
    Dolly seemed like a possibility because of her high rank and closeness to Amari.
    The list on this site only has Amari’s last 4 kids, the ones people knew of and gave names. But she definitely had older kids. She’s seen in a tourist’s video from 2011 with 2 kids incl a juvenile daughter who would now be around 10 years old. And she probably had others before & after.

    Amari and Dolly had their tense moments, often over their kids. They both are very strong personalities. & if Dolly is either a daughter or the next eldest sister, she’d have reason to feel jealous or competitive toward
    Amari’s younger daughters. & yeah she was mean.
    But I wouldn’t say Amari totally couldn’t stand Dolly — unless she was going by The Godfather’s advice to keep your friends close and your enemies closer, because Dolly probably hung out with Amari the most of any of the adult females, they used to sit around groom each other and watch the goings on. Dolly was like the Head Lady-in-Waiting and the Beta Female to Amari’s Alpha. Amari was the only female Dolly submitted to .

    For her to be so very high ranking and so close to Amari, I figured Dolly is probably a close relative even if they don’t look much alike.
    We don’t know who was the father of Dolly. If she’s Popeye and Amari sister, her father probably has been gone a long time. If Dolly is Amari daughter, her father may be Donald who was the Alpha for years before Brutus. He got old, retired and reportedly returned to the forest.

  7. i agree Amari is diabetic and i am 99% certain that is whats going on with her.my husband who is interested in all things wildlife,but has not seen much of these monks videos actually hit the nail on the head. We were both watching one of the many channel videos when the video of Lori doing odd acts to a sleeping Amari came on from the autoplay next. Did I just see what I thought I saw, I laughingly commented to m y husband after seeing Lori, Amaris youngest licking her mothers anus,then moving forward to drink her pee. These are one troop of dirty, and naughty little monkeys I said,to which he agreed. There is a reason behind what Lori just did though,and I think that pee is a acquired taste it might taste sweet to her.
    Being a diabetic myself made me connect the dots were Amari is concerned and main thing with a diabetic is if you have a sugar overload it comes out through your urine leaving urine sweet. As you said above,Amari eats a lot of fruit and fruit contains sugar although the sugar in any fruit is classed as natural sugars. Another good point moving forward is the condition of Amaris eyes that will be damaged due to diabetic control being bad,which in turn starts to damage nerves including the vessels behind the eyes. Amari may end up blind because of this.

  8. @Caroline. You were right. Amari did end up blind by September 2018 which is when she and Lori were removed from the park and went to live at Wildlife Alliance’s Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center. They go them both back to much better condition, but Amari never did recover her eyesight. She died ca. December 2019. They had said in the fall of 2018 that they thought Amari wouldn’t have a long time left. But maybe the tough old girl lasted a bit longer than they had thought.

  9. Many people have said they are curious about the relationship between Amari and Dolly. Dolly’s mother died when Dolly was born. For whatever reason, Amari raised Dolly. After Amari was removed and taken to Tamoa, Dolly was alpha for a brief period of time then she also died from childbirth complications.
